Poonch, July 19: At least 10 people lost their lives after devastating flash floods struck the Lower Murrah area of Bufliaz in Surankote tehsil of Poonch district following heavy rainfall on Sunday. Rescue teams, along with police, civil administration and local volunteers, are continuing search operations in the affected area.
According to officials, the flash floods swept through residential areas, causing extensive destruction and trapping several people. BMO Surankote Dr. Mohd Yousaf Choudhary said that multiple bodies have been recovered from the flood-hit area, while search operations are continuing to locate those who were initially reported missing.
The deceased have been identified as Noor Safia (59), wife of Mohd Latief; Sajad Ahmed (16), son of Mohd Latief; Haqnawaz Ahmed (10), son of Mohd Latief; Shahnawaz Ahmed (10), son of Mohd Latief; Khalda Kouser (25), wife of Yasar Iqbal; Sofian (2), son of Yasar Iqbal; Bano Bi (60), wife of Mohd Hussain; and Mohd Akram (7), son of Mohd Liaqat. Authorities said a total of 10 people have died in the tragedy.
The flash floods also caused significant damage to infrastructure. Electric poles were uprooted, disrupting power supply in several areas, while mobile network services were affected across parts of the flood-hit region, making communication difficult.
Police, civil administration officials, disaster response teams and local residents are jointly engaged in rescue and relief operations. Authorities are assessing the extent of damage and extending assistance to the affected families.
Officials have confirmed that despite the disaster, Mughal Road and the Rajouri–Poonch National Highway remain open for vehicular movement.
The administration has urged residents living near streams and vulnerable areas to remain alert, avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall, and follow official advisories as rescue and relief efforts continue.
